Making your own curtains?

I want to make my own curtains as i want a plain cream curtain with a specific pattern on it in dark purple. if i was to by a plain cream curtain, what would be the easiest way to put the pattern on to the curtain. i was thinking make my own stencil and use fabric paint? and better suggestions?

Fabric paint should work, but I’d experiment on scrap cloth first.
