Dry Clean only fabric with pencil marks….how do I avoid the water marks?

I am making a window scarf and used pencil to make my cutting lines. Since this is a unlined scarf, both sides of fabric will show when hung. How do I remove the pencil marks without leaving unsightly water stains. The fabric is labeled dry clean only and is 100% polyester. And costs about $50.00 a yard so replacing it is NOT an option I care to use. I have tried baking soda, vinegar, Shout, dry cleaning solution. All leave the water stain. I am experimenting with fabric scrapes until I find a solution. Thank you.

Got scraps? Try washing a scrap and see what happens. Polyester should be washable in almost any circumstances. Dry Clean Only labels are sometimes a CYA attempt from the manufacturer, and sometimes just “taking the easy way out”.

Now the bad news: plain old ordinary lead pencil is fairly permanent. The rule when marking and cutting fabric directly is always that the marker line winds up in the wastebasket. Graphite lead can sometimes be lifted out of fabric with a kneaded eraser, but it’s tedious work at best, and sometimes you can’t get it all.

Are the lines near the edges? If so, hang it up and see if you can spot the lines. Bet you can’t once you’re a few feet away. And get someone else’s opinion before you declare that the lines are too prominent.

Consider using piping, a rolled hem, binding or other decorative treatment to cover the lines if it comes down to that.
