In issuing this report, Mr. Holm noted that several trends have converged in the last year, ie price comparison shopping and much more unisex product design.
Some of the other trends were:
1) Although there has been a slight increase last year in the camping (5.34%) and hiking (8.5%), the number of people actively hunting has declined by 1.1%.
2) trail running, camping, and observation nature grew 15.2%, 18.5% and 5.0% respectively.
3) While there has been an upsurge in outdoor camping, including RV camping, Most campers prefer to field relatively close to home.
4) The Pacific Northwest (18.9%) and the Upper Midwest (16.9%) are most of the campers, compared with the rest of the United States.
Hunting and Bow-hunting-Trends
Given that there has been a decrease in the number of hunters and reported a growing number of firearms purchased this year, particularly firearms, it is speculated that most of the firearms purchased are for self defense. When considered in relation to reports that the ammunition manufacturers are working day and night to keep up with orders sales, we have concluded that people are storing these products for future use. "This has caused some concern among outside groups and organizations hunting, "said the editor.
According to the NSGA, hunting and firearms showed the greatest percentage increase between equipment purchases in 2007. Sales of hunting equipment and firearms rose 16% to $ 4.6 billion from $ 3.9 billion in 2007.
Bow hunting and buying crossbows have seen a dramatic increase in the last three years. One reason for this has been the National Archery in the Schools Program. Young and old alike seem drawn to this sport, mainly because of special skills that lead, advances in technology design arc, the relative ease of obtaining a hunting license, archery, and especially the camaraderie of hunting in the woods.
Demographics
The NSGA also found that women constitute 12% of all bowhunters in the United States. About 786,000 women were bowhunting more than once in the past year. The average age is 37.9 female bowhunters. In fact, current data suggest that women are to catch up with men in activities to learn basic survival, backpacking, camping, hunting, hiking and nature. More and more women are buying products survival equipment, as "take to the woods" in large quantities. The growth of the bow (become outdoor women) program in the United States may be one factor contributing to the increase in the number of women outdoors.
The average age of a hunter of females was 30.4 years and the average age of a hunter of men was 45.7 years old. However, youth (ages 6-17 years) for the most part, continue to show a decrease appetite for outdoor activities like camping, backpacking, and hiking.
