I need help with ideas on how to decorate flip flops?

I am into cute flip flops with rhinestones and flowers and beads and such and decided to make my own! I am curious to know what kind of flip flops to buy and if fabric or plastic straps are better. Also what kind of glue to use on what material? I want the fake rhinestones and fabric flowers and maybe some shells along the way. Also how can i safely glue silk ribbon onto the straps? what type of glue and such?
