Fabric Valances
Sewing Help for a Valance?
I am making a valance for a window treatment and it says to cut the fabric width to 22 3/4″. Does that mean I need to cut the 45″ width of fabric down to 22 3/4″?
After that it says to join the widths. What does that mean?
Thank you for the help! I’m new at sewing (very new) and the help is much appreciated!
Are the directions online perhaps? I’d like to see the originals before I say for sure, but it sounds like they want you to cut strips of fabric 22 3/4″ wide, and then sew the short ends of the fabric together to get enough width to cover the window.
The question in my mind is, do they want you to cut the fabric on the lengthwise grain, or crossgrain? In other words, do they want you to cut your fabric from selvage to selvage, or do they want you to split the 45″ width down the middle (which will give you only one 22 3/4″ piece to work with per length of fabric).
In either case, don’t forget to remove the selvages before sewing… they tend to pucker up your fabric as you sew, and when the finished valance gets washed.
