How To Make Fabric Invitations

What did it cost you to make your dress?

Okay! Got the date, got the invitations planned, found the dress. Since I was a little girl my grandmother has always told me that when I got married we would make my dress together and I feel that a handmade gown is just so much more personal.

Now I just need to know how much it will cost. Obviously less than a a store bought gown (I assume) I found the pattern I want, and now I’m waiting for it to get here, so I have to wait for awhile before I can order the fabric and actually start, I was just wondering how much does it usually cost to sew a dress from scratch? I’m not thin, a size 16 so I know I’ll need a little more fabric than average just wanting to get a ball park for my budget.

Here is my dress!! Isn’t it lovely!

You say that it would be less than a store bough gown but that really depends. My wedding dress is made with good quality satin and with beadwork. My mom who worked in a fabric store and is a seamstress told me that if we would have actually bought the fabric for my dress (which a few years ago when she worked there was $250 a yard) We would had spend about the same price or even more because of the labor and the beading than the $1,000 i paid for the dress. I also wanted my mom to make my dress when i was younger but she didn’t think it was a good idea plus she didn’t have the time. I live in nyc and I understand that everything is overprice including fabric here. If you are doing it because you think it would be a great experience for you and your grandmother then great but if you are doing it to save money i would think about it.
good luck
