Quilts and quilt designs are created when combining blocks quilt maker.
A block is the basic unit of a top blanket. Usually the blocks are square. You can make any size, and often made a quilt with blocks of many of the same design. They can be reconstructed from smaller pieces (called patches) or may be © appliqué. It is also possible that a block can be a solid piece of fabric.
The smallest components of a block are called patches. Forms can be different – triangles, rectangles, squares, diamonds, and curves – but the idea is to sew patches together for you ends with a square.
By changing the shape of the patches within a block (ie, replacement of triangles to squares) and / or change the location of the colors of the pieces (ie, you can create a new design for your quilt, however, the seam will not change.
Simple is the name of the game for Quilters many. Using one or two forms to all the pieces in your quilt makes it easy to sew and easy to sew squares and triangles offer many advantages in terms of simplicity. As a beginner Quilter, making the simple sewing gives you the opportunity to focus on learning and practicing the basic techniques that quilt that will be used as a develop their art.
Interesting variations in quilt blocks can be achieved by placing the fabrics, and how each patch is divided.
A simple nine patch quilt can be used as an example of how different of a block can look just by changing the placement of colors within the nine plots of an apple.
Using only two colors of fabric in alternating frames to create a design like a chessboard. With the same nine patch of two colors material, using only square patches in each block, you can create a pattern that looks like a big X on your quilt simply placing the colors in a particular position in each block. Thus, the chain of Ireland, and variations thereof.
Getting a little more complex, it may take some square patches on the blocks and divide in half from corner to corner (commonly called half-square triangles in the quilting world) and create a star design.
Using only half square triangles and square patches, simply re-organization of tissues, the chessboard or the square becomes a basket, or leaf shape, a form of bow tie, or even a series of diamonds.
Another type of triangle that is easy to make a quarter square triangle. That triangle is made by cutting a square in the middle square triangles, then cut half of the triangles in the middle of the square, once again, creating four small triangles isosceles.
You can add complexity to design, increasing the number of colors in your quilt, and design changes again. What once was a black and white chess board can become a block that resembles the letter H.
Your block may appear to be in 3 dimensions through the use of specific colors designated locations.
And all design changes can be created using only three basic shapes – square, half square triangles and quarter-square triangles – plus a little imagination in placing their colors.
As you sew your blocks together, may seem totally different. For example, you could take two blocks of simple average of the square triangles, place in columns, alternating the direction of the court of the triangle, and a quilt that looks like zigzag columns. Using the same blocks, placing them so that all the diagonals are facing the same direction, your quilt could resemble an old-fashioned scrap quilt.
