Indian Fabrics

How do Indian women carry their babys? do they use fabric as a carrier or something else? Or just their arms.?

I have been doing research about baby wearing in different countries. I know several countries the women use fabric to tie the baby on to their hip front or back. I have some Saris that I want to use to make baby carriers and I was wondering if they have ever been used for this purpose. Plus I am curious to find out about that part of the world and how women tote their babys around.

I believe that Dr. Sears has a web site and as he is a big advocate of baby wearing there will be a wealth of information there on slings. Slings and the practice of baby wearing are really the rule rather the exception in most of the world. Different clutures probably have there own design and names for the devices but the concept is pretty universal. I had one myself. There are several comapanies that make conviently adjustable stylized vrsions for the american consumer. Mine was made by (get this) The Over the Shoulder Baby Holder company. LOL I was blessed with non fussy babies so I didn’t use my sling as much as some moms but it does allow you to carry a “constant carry” kind of baby around all day and still have both hands free for other tasks.
