How do I sew a flimsy fabric stiff fabric in a sewing machine from 1950?

I'm making a skirt that has two types of tissue. soft, elastic or weak, and rigid / firm / easy to work with …… attempt to sew the two together, and as I have the fabric tight and narrow to make a straight seam the softer material usually ends extending beyond the stiff cloth …. or put together because I did not stretch enough. I have a machine that does zig zag or modern thing … is very simple. Should I keep it stretched as I can so it does not bunch and cut off access? Or should I use some interface or stabilizer fabric to make the plot easier to work?
