Wild Life Fabric
I’m looking for some inexpensive, but quality ideas to create a Moroccan/Arabian Nights mixed theme bedroom…
I’m working with a medium sized bedroom with a double bed. The owner wants this to have a “magic carpet feel”. And she wants me to use her 3 favorite colors: blue, green, and purple. I’ve already got the hues fixed, I just need some accent help especially concerning the fabrics to use around the space. The owner of this bedroom is 22 and very sophisticated, but also very wild at times. She wants her bedroom to reflect that and not look like a 16 year old lives there. As for the room itself, there is one large window and a bunch of wall space which she suggested covering with fabrics, any idea how to do that? She also wants to paint her popcorn ceiling a different color. Can you paint popcorn ceilings at all? If not, any other ideas? I am out of my element here and doing this re-design as a birthday gift for her. I don’t have the money to hire people, so anything do-it-yourself is golden. Any advice, ideas, or aid is vastly appreciated. Thank you.
First of all paint is key. Use very rich deep colours – I would use purple as the main colour here. When I think Moroccan/Arabian Nights I think Asia so look for Asian inspired fabrics and colours – i.e. things with gold embroidery. You can probably find lots of reasonably priced fabrics at your local fabric store -i’d check out walmart and fabric land if I were you. Look at the link below for ideas on how to drape fabrics. One good way is pinning one end of a long sheet of fabric in the ceiling in one corner of a room, then pinning the other end in the opposite corner. Then pin the centre of the sheet of fabric to the ceiling. I hope that makes sense. You’ll probably have to use nails and hammer them through the fabric into the ceiling.
As for the ceiling yes I’m pretty sure you can paint popcorn ceilings – just ask at your local home depot or canadian tire (if your in canada) for some help. I think you need to buy a special kind of paint roller but it shouldn’t be too expensive.
Go take a look at fabrics with the owner and pick out a few. Then choose a paint colour. You can also drape fabrics over furniture but make sure it doesn’t make it difficult to open and close drawers or cupboards.
Another idea is to do stencilling in gold paint on a dark coloured (i.e. purple or blue) wall. You mentioned a ‘magic carpet feel’ – if you can find one a cheap rug could tie the room together. Try looking for furnishings at Ikea or Winners – you might find some really nice stuff – you can also look at the Ikea website www.ikea.com
I hope this helps and goodluck!
